statement

Andreas Breunig was born in 1983 in Eberbach, DE.
He lives and works in Düsseldorf, DE.

He attended the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf where he studied under Albert Oehlen. Following the steps of his master Breunig developed an artistic research based on nonfigurative painting. At first sight his paintings seem to be a visual chaos even if the works follow actually a pondered and carefully arranged composition made of multi-coloured lines, shapes and gestures. The contrasts between the light background and the sinuous brushstrokes generate layers of meaning, which develop reflections about painting as a way to question the notion of creation.

Breunig was featured in Jetzt, a group show focused on the new generation of German painters at Museum Wiesbaden, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, Deichtorhallen Hamburg DE. Among his recent solo shows VOTE! (with Jana Schröder) PLAY ME HAVE NO PROBS (Solo) at Kunstverein Heppenheim and Ein tun ohne Bild at Kunstverein Reutlingen (group show). His work is part of important collections such as the Kunstmuseum Bonn and the Aïshti Foundation, Lebanon.
