Alfonso Artiaco gallery is glad to announce the opening of the Jannis Kounellis exhibition, Wednesday 16th of September, at which the artist will be present.

After his exhibition in 1997 Jannis Kounellis returns at Alfonso Artiaco gallery proposing site-specific works for the gallery space.

The work presented in this occasion aims to create a union between the last results of the artist research and the recall to the early works.
The work Tragedia Civile (presented for the first time in the same space) becomes the starting point for this exhibition, where new and embedded elements are used to create a new installation. Kounellis keeps underlining the specificity of every single part of his language and, at the same time, reaches a relational complexity where these components come to within the topic formulated.
The work “Untitled” reinforces the space interpretation that is typical of the artist’s research, gathering together in a new way the elements of an historical construction. The confrontation with memory along with the will to take up Tragedia Civile, denote the artist’s need to show and to register the semantic changes occurred through time to the formal components of his aesthetics.

Jannis Kounellis was born in 1936 in Greece. He moved in Italy in 1956, where he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti. Since the sixties he held a major role in the Arte Povera movement, against a traditional point of view of painting trying to define a new modality of figurative composition. Using materials as iron, coal, coffee, fabrics, “alive animals” he creates a new language in his sculptures, paintings, installations and performances.
