Alfonso Artiaco gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition by Niele Toroni on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at 7 pm, the artist will be present.
Niele Toroni presents his fifth solo-show at the Alfonso Artiaco gallery (1989, 1998, 2004, 2008) with a project designed specifically for the spaces of Piazzetta Nilo.
The exhibition includes new works on canvas and on paper, historical pieces on different media and a site specific work on wall as celebration of his seventy-eighth anniversary "78 impronte di pennello n°50 a intervalli di 30 cm per festeggiare i miei 78 anni senza intervalli " (Niele Toroni, March 2015)
"A rose is a rose is a rose…
Who hasn't heard of the poem by Gertrude Stein in which, by repetition of the word which originally evoked the image of the rose, it transforms it into a spoken image, making it fragrant poetry.
Since 1967 Niele Toroni has repeated the imprint of a paintbrush in time and in space. And it is never the same because the same is the same is the same turns out to be far from the same. " (Harald Szeemann)
For over 40 years Niele Toroni has worked with a fixed pattern: imprints are made with a n°50 paint brush at regular 30 cm intervals. Each "work", which the artist himself prefers to call "Travail/Peinture' (Work/Painting), is made with this procedure and is applied on a medium of a varying nature: canvas, paper, wall, floor, etc.
The principle of regularity in Toroni's method is given in the continuous spatial distances of 30 centimetres and also the temporal delay of the del gesture of the artist thus defining a formal rhythm.
Toroni's paintings seem to suggest that to paint, today, like yesterday, can exclusively consist in showing what the painting is in its primordial weft: to paint means always to apply a pigment, on a support generally with the medium of a paint-brush. Time and space are crossed from the imprint of the artist that characterizes them and differentiates them.
For that, Niele Toroni, to this day defines his artistic freedom in the consistency of his approach.
