Alfonso Artiaco gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Sergio Prego solo-exhibition on Wednesday, January 19th, 2011 at 7.30 PM, in the presence of the artist.
Sergio Prego, for his second solo-show at the Alfonso Artiaco gallery (the first in 2007), relates the development of his research through the dialogue among the two videos “Bug” and “Ciclo” and the photographic sequences “Timothy”, “Ikurrina” and “Empty Space”.
These works, all of recent realization, represent a further stage of the artist’s artistic project that from “Mister pequeño abandona toda esperanza” in 1996, has continued to follow the desire to create situations in which the human body frees itself from its own set of rules and restrictions, enabling it to move freely inside the space and to depend on other coordinates.
The complex system made up of the confluence of sculpture-performance-video has characterised the work of Sergio Prego by the desire to challenge the limits and conventions of our habitable surroundings with the utopian objective of creating alternative ones that contrast with those already existing.
In many occasions, this desire has been directly related with the questioning of physical laws, and, therefore, with objective definitions that have often been supposedly imposed on the perception of reality. Even when the specificity of each piece is taken into account the Spanish artist insists once and again upon the need to consider different ways of capturing and relating with space. That is, different ways of interpreting reality, but, also, of interacting with it.
Sergio Prego was born in 1969 in San Sebastian (Spain) and, lives and works in Spain and New York.
In 2010 Sergio Prego participated at different exhibitions and had been one of the artists chosen for the project PRIMER PROFORMA at MUSAC in Leòn (ES) and his installation IKURRIÑA QUARTER had been shown at Art Unlimited during Art |41| Basel. He has exposed at CAC – Centro di Arte Contemporanea of Malaga, at Museo di Arte Contemporanea in Denver and at P.S. 1 MoMA in New York. In 2006 the Basque artist l’artista basco won the Illycaffè Present Future prize in occasion of the fair ARTISSIMA, in Turin. In 2005 he created site-specific installation at the project room of Palazzo delle Papesse - Centro Arte Contemporanea, in Siena and in 2003 participated at the show ABSOLUT GENERATIONS for the section "Extra 50" of 50 Venice Biennial.
